DUNCAN BROS ECOTECH INC.

Reducing Waste in Canadian Forestry

Duncan Bros EcoTech Inc. is committed to reshaping the future of reforestation with practical, sustainable innovations. Founded in Victoria, British Columbia, our company was built on the belief that forestry operations can be both efficient and environmentally responsible.

Our flagship product, the biodegradable tree cone, is designed to solve a long-standing problem in the industry: the inefficiency and lasting environmental damage caused by single-use plastic cones. By offering a cone that both performs reliably in the field and also naturally breaks down afterwards, we are helping planters work smarter while protecting our forests for generations to come.

More than just a product company — our mission is to support Canada’s forestry sector in reaching its climate goals, one innovative solution at a time.

About Us

The Duncan brothers bring over a decade of hands-on experience in forestry — from reforestation to wildfire suppression. Our time in the field has given us a front-row seat to the challenges facing our forests, among which one needs urgent addressing: plastic waste.

The evidence is undeniable. We are living in a global plastic-pollution crisis. What was once thought to be only in oceans and landfills has now spread everywhere — microplastics are showing up in rivers, ecosystems, and even in our food.

Determined to reduce plastic waste in an industry that we know intimately, we developed a fully biodegradable alternative to polyethylene browse guards, the current industry standard. Through partnerships with leading bioplastic innovators, we’ve created a guard designed specifically for the conditions of coastal British Columbia.

Our solution delivers the same protection and benefits as traditional cones, but with zero lasting environmental impacts. Better still, our guards are engineered to “self-destruct” at exactly the right time: exactly long enough to protect young trees when they are most vulnerable, but never outlasting their purpose or restricting growth.

At Duncan Bros EcoTech, our vision is clear — protect trees, protect ecosystems, and protect the future.

Lochlan Duncan - Founder, Duncan Bros EcoTech Inc.

"With over five years of experience in tree planting and wildland firefighting in coastal and interior operations, I’ve seen firsthand both the resilience of our forests and also the challenges they face. One challenge that stood out to me was the waste created by plastic browse guards — a tool meant to protect trees but ultimately harming the environment. That’s why I set out to create a better solution: a biodegradable guard that protects young trees without leaving a trace."

About Our Product

At Duncan Bros EcoTech Inc., our biodegradable browse guards are designed to directly support Canada’s commitments to sustainability and plastic reduction. Both the federal and provincial governments, as well as other levels of government, have pledged to phase out single-use plastics, reduce plastic waste in landfills and the environment, and encourage innovation in sustainable materials.

By replacing polyethylene browse guards with our fully biodegradable alternative, we help align reforestation practices with these commitments. Our product not only reduces plastic waste and cleanup costs but also ensures that critical ecosystems remain free of long-lasting pollutants. This is a practical, made-in-Canada solution that turns policy promises into on-the-ground results.

Sustainable At Every Step

At Duncan Bros EcoTech Inc., sustainability isn’t just the end goal—it’s built into every stage of our process. Our biodegradable browse guards are made with PBAT, a plant-based polymer designed to break down naturally without leaving behind harmful residues. Unlike traditional plastics, PBAT is created from renewable sources and engineered for a controlled end-of-life, ensuring maximum tree protection with zero long-term environmental impact. We are committed to keeping our supply chain local. By sourcing materials, collaborating with Canadian bioplastic suppliers, and working with domestic manufacturers, we reduce transportation emissions, support local industry, and maintain a smaller carbon footprint. From raw ingredients to the final product, our focus remains on delivering a forestry solution that is not only effective in the field, but also responsible towards the planet.
